The first Summer Institute was held from July 26, 2021 to August 13, 2021.

    • Obtain training in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology
    • Incorporate GIS into your Social Studies curriculum through community engagement projects!
    • Practicing your newly acquired GIS skills amongst your peers!
    • Participate in field trips with the students from the Summer Camp!

There are two entrances to enter the HUB:

  • Intersection of West & Connecticut St – Enter through the sliding doors
  • Entrance facing the parking lot (D-Lot) – Enter through the sliding doors
Parking Information

Free Parking is available:

  • In D-Lot and D-2 Lot for free. Parking tickets have been suspended during the Summer Program dates (7/26 to 8/13)
  • Along Connecticut St and West St

Elevators & Stairs

To reach the Center for Health Equity and Inclusion you may take the stairs or elevator:

  • If you entered from the corner of West & Connecticut St:
    • Elevators are located to the left by the Pharmacy- Be sure to select the third (3) floor
    • Stairs are located towards the left down the corridor past the Cafe and D’Lish Kitchen
  • If you entered by the Parking Lot entrance:
    • Elevators are located down the corridor past the D’Lish Kitchen and Security Desk on your right – Be sure to select the third (3) floor
    • Stairs are located towards the left down the corridor past the Cafe and D’Lish Kitchen

Equipment

A laptop and wired mouse will be provided to you during the duration of the program. These laptops cannot be taken home.

The DCWNY team requires the use of masks at all times.

Hand sanitizer and wipes will be readily available at all times.

Travel for Field Trips

There are three field trips scheduled the last two weeks of the Summer Institute.

Please travel to these locations on the designated days with an arrival time between 8:45am and 9:00am. Activities at these sites will start at 9:00am sharp.

  • Wednesday, August 4th – Red Jacket Riverfront Park (20 Smith Street, Buffalo, NY 14210)

  • Friday, August 6th – Broderick Park (1170 Niagara St, Buffalo, NY 14213)

  • Wednesday, August 10th – Buffalo Sewage Treatment Plant (90 W Ferry St, Buffalo, NY 14213)

Wardrobe

There are three field trips with high school students during the last two weeks of the program where we will explore local parks and a water treatment facility. For these trips we ask you dress accordingly! We suggest comfortable, closed-toed shoes and casual clothes as we explore our community.

Expectations

A more detailed Teacher Expectations document will be provided to you. Here is what to expect during the Summer Institute:

  • Leading instruction for the student groups during the last two weeks of the Institute
  • Facilitate the creation of a StoryMap (you’ll learn more about this week one!) with students
  • Create one GIS-integrated lesson plan to be implemented throughout the following academic year
  • Complete all pre- and post-assessments associated with the grant
  • Attend and actively engage in the monthly professional development series the following academic year
What happens after the Summer Institute?

GIS support will be provided to you throughout the following Academic Year (2021-2022). This support can be:

  • Helping you set up your ArcGIS Online account
  • Working through a GeoInquiry together
  • And much more

We will also be coordinating classroom observations with you when you are teaching your GIS-integrated lesson plans. Our External Evaluator, Dr. Harrison Hao Yang.

Additionally, we look forward to seeing you at the monthly professional development series that will be held on D’Youville’s campus and available virtually. More details for this PD series will be made available soon.
