We had an opportunity to sit down with LaPorscha Black Gardner, a recent graduate from D’Youville College. LaPorscha graduated with a BSN in 2017 and currently works as an registered nurse in the float pool at Sister’s of Charity Hospital, the St. Joseph campus here in Western New York. She loves the flexibility there is as a float RN and the ability to see many different areas of the hospital and the nursing profession. LaPorscha enjoys floating to the Intensive Care Unit, the telemetry floors, the emergency department, the orthopedic unit, and multiple med-surg floors! She finds the profession of nursing to be challenging in general, but worthwhile. One of the most challenging aspects of her job is when she is on night shift and doesn’t always have the same resources available as the day shift. When asked about advice for current nursing students, LaPorscha says that “if you unsure of what kind of nursing you want to go into, floating will give you a great perspective!”
