Hi Faculty,

Based on the data submitted via the EAB Early Alert system, we found an overwhelming number of students are struggling with time management and submitting assignments on time. The data shows that over 210 students or a third of all alerts have to do with students missing or not submitting assignments on time.

The good news is there are some easy ways to leverage Canvas to help students with their time management skills. Many Canvas assignment features allow you to assign a due date (see Due Date attachment). If you set due dates using this feature, it will automatically show up on your students “To-Do List” and Canvas “Calendar”. Enabling these features should take less than 5-minutes and will immediately improve a student’s ability to know when assignments are due.

Students can also customize their Notifications Preferences (see How to Receive Canvas Notifications) to send them reminders to their email, Canvas app, or cell phones (see iPhone and Android handout).

Please check your courses to ensure that you are assigning Due Dates for all assignments and forward these handouts to your students. Student Affairs will also be sending a similar announcement to all students, but we’re hoping that over-communicating about this issue will help ensure students are successful this semester.

If you have any questions, please reach out to onlinelearning@dyc.edu for assistance.

Thanks,
Jeremiah
