As we approach mid-summer, I am writing to provide a brief update on fall 2020 reopening plans. Thank you for your departments’ efforts in May to plan for a mix of face-to-face, online, and hybrid instruction. Together, Facilities and Academic Affairs have been conducting an ongoing and detailed review of the fall schedule and potential classroom assignments, with consideration of population density in classrooms and building zones. Analysis to date indicates that thoughtful departmental planning has yielded a balanced mix of instructional modalities for safe social distancing on campus.
By now you have read the COVID-19 Restart Plan for Students and Parents that was shared with our students in preparation for a Fall 2020 return to campus. We are currently preparing a similar guidance document for all employees that will be introduced to faculty and staff prior to our on-campus return. As you might expect, this document will remain dynamic and will be subject to change as conditions continue to evolve throughout the summer and fall. We sincerely appreciate your patience and flexibility as we navigate uncertainty.
Please look for a forthcoming Zoom invitation to a late July campus-wide meeting for faculty and staff that will review in detail all reopening plans and procedures. This meeting will be recorded for those unable to attend. Following the meeting, if you have questions or suggestions please send them to firstname.lastname@example.org. Additionally, all employees will be required to complete a mandatory safety training video prior to returning to campus. Details of the training video will be emailed to employees in the next week.
In preparation for safe reopening, a team representing diverse stakeholders has spent months reviewing state and national guidance on health and safety, and preparing campus for our safe return. These comprehensive preparations include, among others, new campus cleaning procedures, directional and safety signage, hand sanitizer and cleaning wipe stations, expanded swipe card entry, provision of PPE and health screening protocols. Faculty and staff have been asked to remain off campus in July while preparations are underway.
Currently, administrative managers are working with their teams to plan for on campus staffing that will ensure excellent service from campus offices while also managing population density on campus. We anticipate that staff will begin a phased return to campus around August 3, 2020.
This is a challenging time for faculty, staff and our families. We are all experiencing anxiety about the health of friends, colleagues and loved ones, and uncertainty as plans for childcare, education, and just about everything in our routines remains in flux. Let us strive to support each other as we prepare to start a new academic year, and build upon lessons learned during the shift to remote work and teaching last spring.
I look forward to seeing you on campus or on Zoom in the near future. Please save the date for a virtual College Assembly on Thursday August 20.
